Coil Build Name Quiz

Coil Build Name Quiz

Clapton, Fralien, Staggerton: these are just a few of the names you run into once you start building coils. If you build, or follow anyone who makes elaborate builds, you have probably noticed that many of them have pretty unique names.

This post first ran with an interactive quiz that our build team on Instagram helped us put together. That quiz is no longer available, so here is a version you can take right on the page. Read each name, picture what the build looks like, then open the answer. We don’t expect many people to get every one right, but you will learn some new build names either way.

Name that build

Parallel

Two or more straight wires wound side by side into a single coil.

Twisted

Two or more wires twisted together like a rope, then wound into a coil.

Clapton

A core wire tightly wrapped in a much thinner wire, so the coil looks like a wound guitar string. The name is a nod to guitarist Eric Clapton.

Fused Clapton

Two or more core wires laid side by side and wrapped together by one thin outer wire.

Alien

Several core wires wrapped in a thin outer wire that has been loosened into a wavy, uneven pattern instead of lying flat.

Framed Staple

A stack of flat ribbon wires held between two round frame wires, all wrapped together with a thin outer wire.

Fralien

A mash-up of framed staple and alien: a framed staple core with a wavy, alien-style outer wrap.

Staggerton

A staggered take on the Clapton, where the outer wrap alternates between thicker and thinner sections, giving the coil a ridged, stepped surface.

What score did you get?

Before you build

Exotic builds look great, but they take practice. Start with our guides to building a basic coil and building a parallel coil, and learn how resistance works in What Are Ohms and Sub-Ohm Vaping? Always check a build’s resistance before you fire it, and make sure your batteries can handle it. Our mechanical mod battery safety guide covers the basics.

Where things stand now

Coil building is still a craft plenty of adult hobbyists love, even though prebuilt coils and pod systems have made it optional for most people who vape. The names above are still the ones you will hear in rebuildable circles. Whether you build your own or not, the Zamplebox Club can keep your setup stocked with vape juice picked for your taste.
