TFV12 – The King of Sub-Ohm Tanks?

SMOK’s TFV12 Cloud Beast King was hailed as the king of sub-ohm tanks in 2017, billed as the best cloud-chasing, flavor-delivering sub-ohm tank on the market that year. Was it really that impressive? We shared a video review from IndoorSmokers to help answer that.
This is a 2017 review, and SMOK tanks are not sold on our site, so read it as a look back at one of the era’s biggest cloud tanks, with tips that still apply to any sub-ohm tank.
Short version: The TFV12’s coils were rated up to 350 watts, which sounds like expert-only territory, but the recommended sweet spot was 130 to 200 watts. If your mod could handle 200 watts, you could run this cloud-chucking tank.
Big numbers, reasonable sweet spot
With coils that could handle up to 350 watts, the TFV12 sounded like a beast only a vaping expert could tame. In practice, the recommended optimal range was 130 to 200 watts, similar to its predecessor, the TFV8.
That made it far more approachable than the headline number suggested. If you had a powerful device capable of 200 watts, you were completely fine running the cloud-chucking king of sub-ohm tanks.
What a tank like this needs
A capable mod and quality batteries
Running 130 to 200 watts takes a high-wattage box mod, and that asks a lot of your batteries. Use cells rated for the job, keep them in good condition and never push a device past what its batteries can handle. Our guides to recommended vaping batteries and mechanical mod battery safety cover the details.
High-VG juice
Cloud tanks are built for thicker, high-VG e-liquid, which makes bigger vapor. Our guide to PG and VG explains the difference, and what sub-ohm vaping is covers the hardware side.
Coil care
High-wattage coils go through juice fast. Prime new coils before you fire them, keep the tank topped up to avoid dry hits, and change coils when the flavor fades or starts to taste burnt. See when to change your vape coils and how to clean your tank.
So, was it the king?
We called the TFV12 an incredible device from SMOK at the time, and it is easy to see why it wore the crown in 2017: big clouds and strong flavor, without needing an extreme setup to get them. IndoorSmokers’ video review walks through what he made of it.
Newer tanks have come along since, and many vapers now prefer smaller pod systems and disposable vapes. If you still love chasing clouds, the same basics apply to any modern sub-ohm tank. For more tanks from that era, see our trending vape tanks roundup.
