Summer Vaping Tips: Stay Cool & Safe

Summer is prime time for road trips, beach days and long evenings outside. It’s also hard on your vape gear. Heat can change how your e-liquid tastes, make tanks leak and put extra stress on lithium-ion batteries.
These tips will help you keep your juice tasting right, your batteries in good shape and your summer plans on track.
Short version: Keep e-liquid and devices out of hot cars and direct sun. Carry spare batteries in a case, don’t charge anything in the heat or unattended, and bring extra juice and water wherever you go.
Protect your e-liquid from heat and sun
Heat and sunlight speed up the breakdown of nicotine and flavor. A bottle that bakes on a dashboard can come out darker, harsher and duller than it went in, and that damage doesn’t reverse once things cool down.
A parked car can get far hotter than the air outside in a short time, even on a mild day, so don’t leave juice or devices in the car.
- Store bottles somewhere cool and dark, like a cabinet, a drawer or a bag kept in the shade.
- Use a small cooler on road trips. Seal bottles and devices in a zip-top bag first so condensation can’t get to them.
- No cooler? Keep your gear in a bag in the shade, out of direct sun, and take it with you when you leave the car.
- Skip the garage. Garages, sheds and screened porches can heat up fast in summer, so keep your stash inside the house.
Heat also thins e-liquid, which can make some tanks leak or flood. Higher-VG juices are thicker and tend to leak less in warm weather. Thinner juice also wicks faster, so you may go through it quicker than usual. Pack a spare bottle, and see how long vape juice lasts for more on storage.
Keep batteries and devices out of the heat
Most vape devices run on lithium-ion batteries. Heat shortens their life, drains them faster and raises the risk of overheating. Treat your device the way you’d treat your phone on a hot day.
Charging
- Don’t charge devices or batteries in a hot car or in direct sun.
- Use the cable or charger recommended for your device.
- Let a hot device cool down in the shade before you use or charge it.
- Never leave anything charging unattended, and unplug it once it’s full.
- If a device or battery gets hot, smells odd or starts to swell, stop using it and move it away from anything flammable.
Carrying spares
Loose batteries are a real hazard. If a battery touches keys, coins or other metal in a pocket or bag, it can short-circuit, overheat and vent. Always carry spare batteries in a plastic battery case, and replace any battery with a torn wrap or dents. Our guides to recommended vaping batteries and battery safety cover the details.
If your device has a built-in battery, keep it in a shaded bag or a cooler, sealed in a zip-top bag, rather than in a hot glove box.
Road trips, beaches and flights
- Pack a kit. Bring spare coils or pods, an extra bottle of juice, a battery case and a backup device if you have one.
- Keep sand and water out. Sand can clog airflow slots and threads, and water can damage the electronics, so keep your device in a case or zip-top bag between puffs. Wipe sunscreen and bug spray off your hands first, since some of these products can mark plastic parts.
- Drink water. Heat and vaping can both leave you feeling dry, so keep water handy. Our post Can Vaping Make You Sick? covers dry mouth and other common side effects.
- Check local rules. Some beaches, parks, patios and venues ban vaping along with smoking. Flavor and sales rules also vary by state and city and change often, so check before you travel.
- Flying? Vapes and spare batteries have to go in your carry-on bag, not in checked luggage, and e-liquid follows the usual carry-on liquid limits. You can’t vape on the plane. Our guide to flying with vape gear has the details, and it’s worth checking the TSA’s current rules before you go.
- Be considerate. Crowded beaches and outdoor events call for good vaping etiquette, so step away from other people, especially anyone eating.

Cool flavors for hot days
Hot days call for something crisp. Icy and menthol blends bring the chill, while watermelon, lemonade and other fruit flavors taste like summer. A few icy picks to start with:

Common questions
Can heat ruin vape juice?
Yes. High heat and sunlight speed up the breakdown of nicotine and flavor, which can leave juice darker, harsher and flatter. Cooling it down afterward won’t bring the flavor back.
Is it OK to leave my vape in the car?
It’s best not to. Parked cars heat up fast, and heat is hard on both e-liquid and lithium-ion batteries. Take your device with you.
Why does my tank leak more in summer?
Warm e-liquid gets thinner and flows more easily. A higher-VG juice, a properly assembled tank and a fresh coil usually help.
Can I bring my vape on a plane?
Yes, in your carry-on bag only, with spare batteries in a case. You can’t vape during the flight. Check the TSA’s current rules before you go.
