How to Become a Vape Model

The vape industry has its share of models, influencers, promoters and other people who get paid to spread the word about vaping products. Sounds like a pretty sweet gig. But how exactly do you land it?
We weren’t sure either, so at the 2018 Electronic Cigarette Convention (ECC) in Ontario, California, we went around and interviewed a bunch of people doing the job to find out how it’s done.
What the video covers
The video collects tips from the pros who were working the show. If you’re an adult thinking about modeling or promoting in the vaping industry, it’s a good place to start.
What the job involves
A lot of the work happens at trade shows and events, where brand ambassadors staff booths, talk about products and meet shop owners and vapers. Online, influencers create photos and videos for brands on social media. Either way, you’re representing nicotine products, so professionalism matters.
Know the rules first
- It’s adults-only work. Vaping products are for adults 21 and older, and promotion should only ever be aimed at adults.
- Warnings are required. Ads for nicotine products must carry the FDA’s nicotine addiction warning, and the FDA and FTC have sent warning letters to companies over influencer posts that left it out.
- Skip the health talk. Claims that a product is less harmful or helps people quit smoking are tightly regulated, so leave them out.
- Platforms have their own rules. Most social networks restrict how vaping products can be promoted, so check before you post.

Where things stand now
Promoting nicotine products is more tightly regulated than it was in 2018, and the rules keep changing at the federal, state and platform level. If this is a career you want, work with established brands that take compliance seriously, and keep every post aimed at adults.
WARNING: This product contains nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive chemical. For adults 21+ only.
